Bret is an expressive and exciting saxophonist and composer, who, while tipping his hat to the masters of the past, continually forges forward to create his own new contemporary sound in both jazz and contemporary chamber music.


Fragments & Gateways

Bret is currently performing with his exciting new jazz chamber trio project Fragments & Gateways. The trio, which features Bret - soprano and tenor saxophones, clarinet, John Horler-piano, Alec Dankworth-bass, fuses chamber music and jazz composition and beautiful arrangements of classic standards. Fragments & Gateways has debut CD release planned for autumn 2012 and will also feature a strings quartet.

Following studies at the Guildhall School of Music in Jazz Performance, Symphonic Clarinet, and Composition, Bret has performed and collaborated with the UK’s distinguished jazz artistes including Kenny Wheeler, Tim Garland, Gerard Presencer, Henry Lowther, Steve Waterman, Martin Shaw, Paul Clarvis, Ralph Salmins, Jim Mullen, John Etheridge, John Horler, Michael Garrick, Liam Noble, Ross Stanley, Pete Jacobsen, John Critchenson, Alec Dankworth, Brigitte Beraha, and performs at leading UK jazz venues and festivals with his own quartet featuring Ross Stanley and Paul Clarvis.

Continually developing his work as a composer, Bret has a particular interest in combining elements of jazz and 20th century chamber music, and has composed music for film, television, radio and dance. Bret holds a Master of Music degree from Surrey University in composition where he studied with Steve Goss and Sebastian Forbes, with a thesis of contemporary pieces and film music. Bret was awarded 2nd prize in the 17th Annual Composer and Choreographer Workshop for his score composed to accompany a contemporary dance work.
